I admit - my favorite part of blogging is looking at the pictures.
I’m a visual person, making it imperative that I have pictures to go along with my story. These pictures help me construct the story in the subliminal part of my mind. Not only does the story progress and change, but so do the pictures. Most likely this is because I’m a product of the movie and television era. My earliest recollection of childhood is watching film strips in school on a huge projection screen. I can still remember when the film ended; the filmstrip would fall off the last spool, and spin around – click – click – click until someone turned the projector off. Now, fast forward 100 years! What has changed? Yes, the delivery of mass media has significantly changed with modern technology as film has transformed to digital. But the way we receive information in the brain is the same. Pictures make the story. Dr. Seuss for example makes us associate an ugly, un-kept, furry, green animal when we hear the name Grinch.
The same goes for the name Horton. I picture a kind, sweet-natured elephant who cares about other animals or people, while saving a speck of dust from destruction. So when I blog, I think about the pictures. I think about what a picture has to say, all by itself. Then I ask myself, “How will this enhance my story and make it come to life?” The magic happens through use of pictures. Through realism or fantasy, an image will bring a story into life.
Imagery is an essential part of blogging. Whenever you see a picture, right click your mouse and save the image. When it’s time for you to start writing an article, open the pictures you have saved. Which one stands out? Which one has a story you feel like telling? Pick that and start writing! Image: "Wow Daddy!" courtesy of FaceBook.
